Emerald Isle
Land of the Maritime Forests
Nomadic Native Americans supposedly were the first inhabitants of Emerald Isle, followed by whalers, and, in 1893, a handful of families that arrived here from Diamond City. This area was also well-known pirate country, particularly during the early 1700's when Blackbeard and other pirates were known to have traveled these waters. Emerald Isle served as an official seaport with a customs office, and during the summer of 1747, the town was actually attacked not once but twice by pirates.Today, the pirates are long gone and the area is home to about 4000 year-round residents. Fishing and fish processing are still a way of life for many, and Emerald Isle has become an attractive beach destination for tourists. Maritime forests are an integral part of the lush landscape here, and many say this is how Emerald Isle got its name.
