Morehead City

Crystal Coast Attractions

Packed with History. And a Boater’s Dream

Don't let the sleepy, peaceful atmosphere of Morehead City fool you, this is a town with history, boating, fishing, shops, and activities that never seem to stop. Several famous events are held here annually - the renowned Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, for instance, and the North Carolina Seafood Festival, which attracts more than 125,000 people every year. There are also numerous weekend festivals celebrating everything from wine to history for natives and visitors alike.

But in addition to these popular gatherings and festivities, Morehead is so much more. The fishing alone is incomparable, with the Gulf Stream just 30 miles off shore. "Head boats" and charters line the marina, and reservations for singles or groups are easily made. Scuba diving is also an enormous draw, as Morehead City is known as one of the top five diving destinations in the world. 2000 shipwrecks line the coastal waters in this "Graveyard of the Atlantic" and the recent discovery of Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge was made just a mile from Bogue Inlet.

Moving further inland, Summer Saturdays here at Morehead bring Jaycee-sponsored Concerts in the Park; and countless artists' galleries offer an eclectic mix of painting, pottery, art glass, woven textiles and sculpture. Additionally, numerous shops and restaurants of the Waterfront and Historic District offer a variety of seafood and non-seafood recipes, antiques and unique gift items, local history, and many opportunities for discovery and adventure.
