Towns That Surround

A sprinkling of small towns surrounds this peaceful area - each with its own rich history. There's Salter Path, quietly wrapping its way around the serenity of Indian Beach, which traces its roots through generations of fishing and related industries. Pine Knoll Shores, adjacent to these two towns, recently underwent a $25 million expansion to triple its size. "From the Mountains to the Sea" serves as the attraction’s new theme, and more than 40 exhibits and activities include 2500 animals, shipwrecks and educational expeditions. And Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach offer a plentitude of water sports and beach activities, along with a variety of restaurants and family entertainment options.

If it's history you want, that's here too - and plenty of it. Both Beaufort and Morehead City trace their roots to pre-colonial times when pirates roamed the seas and, if you listen to legend, even built their homes here. Both historic Beaufort and Morehead City hold incredible charm as well, with their fishing village atmospheres and quaint collection of shops and galleries and restaurants all along the water.  The history of the past centuries spent here intriguingly intertwines with today, and you'll find Victorian homes mixed with Revolutionary War houses; and learn of notable events that once occurred on these streets along with the fascinating people who walked them.

The entire area in and around Indian Beach is so rich in so many ways - offering history, nature preserves, wildlife watching, and a whole world of activities for almost anything you’d like to experience. Each town has its own personality and the journey to discovery is definitely half the fun.
