Mark Ellis Tipton was raised around builders, so it was only natural for him to continue in the tradition. A second-generation homebuilder, Tipton — a North Carolina native — spent time in the U.S. Navy but felt the pull to return to his roots.
In 1981, Tipton founded Whistler Investment Group LLC, a developer and unlimited licensed general contractor company based in Raleigh. The name is inspired by a piece by local Bladen County artist James McNeil Whistler, called “The Whistler’s Mother.” “I really felt that image projected a sense of honesty, integrity and trust,” Tipton says.
Whistler provides services in land development, and residential and commercial building. “As an unlimited, licensed general contractor, Whistler can build any size project,” Tipton explains, adding that it currently concentrates heavily on land development for residential and commercial components of its approximate $600 million in active projects.
Whistler is involved with residential development projects throughout North Carolina, as well as Georgia and Texas. It also has in-house specialists in architecture, civil engineering, land planning and marketing. “That has allowed it to become somewhat self-sufficient,” Tipton says.
