Eco Adventure on the Crystal Coast
12/13/2007

Compared to our neighboring coastal communities, the natural beauty of the Crystal Coast lends itself to some awe-inspiring ecological escapes. We have over fifty-five miles of pristine shorelines on the National Seashore near and around the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
There are an abundance of rare species including the Loggerhead, a marine turtle that lays its fragile eggs in the sand, North Carolina being one of only four states in the U.S. to provide suitable nesting areas. Our shores also house the Piping Plover, a sparrow-sized shorebird that nests and feeds on the sandy beaches.
For the bird-enthusiast, the spring is an excellent time to view the shorebirds like the majestic Tundra Swans to Egrets and White and Glossy Ibises while the fall is a great time to see the Sharp—shinned Hawks and Peregrine Falcons.
Bathed in the clear warm waters of the Gulf Stream, the coast of North Carolina offers some of the best diving areas in the U.S., the abundant marine life and numerous shipwrecks of North Carolina offer something for scuba divers of all interests and skill level.
Those that are more adventurous weave their way through the inlets and waterways along the Crystal Coast on kayaks and canoes. Guided tours are available year round. Adventures are abundant such as sailing, fishing, scuba diving, kayaking, bird watching, boating and nature trails through the Croatan National Forest. The Crystal Coast offers numerous activities for people of any age or adventure level.
